Privacy Policy
LearnTamil with Yazh — for parents and guardians
Last updated: [date of launch]
- Children never create accounts. Only a parent or guardian (18+) can.
- We ask for a first name or nickname for each learner — nothing else about the child. No photos, surname, birth date or location.
- There are no ads, no tracking and no chat in the learning room. If you say yes, we count visits to our public pages anonymously (see section 4); you can say no, and nothing is loaded.
- The league (leaderboard) is off unless a parent switches it on for a learner, and shows only a nickname, an avatar and star totals.
- Without an account, progress stays on your device and is not sent to us.
- You can export or delete everything yourself, inside the app.
1. Who we are
LearnTamil with Yazh is run by Yazh Kalaiyagam, a Tamil folk-arts academy in the United Arab Emirates ([registered business name and address]). Contact us about privacy at admin@yazhkalaiyagam.com.
2. What we collect, and why
| Information | When | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Learner’s first name or nickname, chosen avatar and colour theme | Always (stored on the device). Also sent to us if you sign in to a parent account. | To personalise the learning room and keep each learner’s progress separate. |
| Learning progress: letters traced, stories finished, game and test scores, stars, medals, days of use | Same as above. | To show progress, award medals and certificates, and show you results in the Parent Desk. |
| Parent’s name, email address, password (stored only as a one-way hash), time you confirmed you are a parent or guardian | When you create a parent account. | To run the account, sign you in, send password-reset emails and keep your learners’ progress safe across devices. |
| A note of the day the Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu opening screen was last shown, and whether you switched it off | Always, on the device only. | So it appears once a day at most. |
| A count of finished activities (on the device) before a parent account exists | Always, on the device only. | To know when to invite you to create a free parent account. |
| Offer codes you enter: the code, your account and the date | Only if you enter a code. | So that each code can be used once per parent and stays within its limit. |
| The learner’s class level (Starter, Explorer or Advanced), chosen by the parent | Always (stored on the device); also sent to us if you sign in. | To show lessons, stories and games that suit the learner’s age and class. |
| Learning totals: stars, letters traced, stories and lessons finished, the date of last activity | If you sign in to a parent account. | To show progress on the Parent Desk and to help the academy see which lessons work. Academy staff can see learners’ nicknames and these totals. |
| League entry: nickname, avatar, star totals and level | Only if a parent switches the league on for that learner (Parent Desk → switch). | To show a friendly weekly and all-time leaderboard to other learners. Switch it off at any time; staff may hide a nickname that is not suitable. |
| Class bookings (learner’s nickname, class, time) | When you book a live class. | To run the class and send the right people the meeting link. |
| Payment records: plan bought, amount, date. We never see or store card numbers. For a bank-transfer order we also keep the order reference, the WhatsApp number you gave and the date the payment was confirmed; the transfer itself is on our bank statement. | When you place an order for a plan or class bundle. | To give you access and keep the financial records the law requires. |
| Parent’s name, phone, child’s age and your message | If you use the class enquiry form on the home page. | To reply to you. The form is processed by Formspree. |
| Standard server logs (IP address, time, page requested) | Automatically, by our web host. | Security and fixing faults. |
We recommend using a nickname for each learner. We never ask a child for contact details, and the app has no way for children to message anyone.
3. Who else handles data
- Our web hosting provider ([host name and server location]) stores the account database.
- Google (Google Analytics), only if you allow visit statistics, receives the anonymous visit data described in section 4.
- Our bank receives bank-transfer payments and holds the details on its statements.
- Email and WhatsApp: order details are emailed to you and to us, and you may message us on WhatsApp, which handles that conversation under its own privacy terms.
- Stripe, if card payment is offered, processes payments and keeps the billing details you give at checkout.
- Formspree processes the class enquiry form.
- Zoom, Google Meet or a similar service hosts live classes. Joining happens on their site under their privacy terms.
- YouTube (privacy-enhanced mode) plays video lessons when we add them.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for advertising. Fonts are served from our own site, not from Google. Some of these providers may process data outside the UAE.
4. Cookies and device storage
- Learning progress is kept in your browser’s local storage on your device.
- One sign-in cookie (named
ykl) is set only if you sign in. It is strictly necessary and is not used for tracking. - The app saves its pages on your device so it can work offline.
- We do not use advertising cookies.
- Visit statistics (only if you allow them). On our public pages (the home page, the information pages, Privacy, Terms) and on the My Account page we would like to use Google Analytics 4 to see which pages help parents and how many create an account or place an order. Until you press Allow, nothing is loaded from Google and no analytics cookie is set. If you allow it, Google sets two cookies (
_gaand_ga_…, kept up to about six months) and receives the page address without any query or fragment, the page title, your approximate location from your IP address, and your browser and device type. We switch off Google signals and ad personalisation, and we never send a learner’s name, an email address, scores, order numbers or anything from inside the lessons. Pages inside the learning rooms, the certificate check page and the admin area are never measured. We also record, without any personal detail, that someone created an account or started an order, and for an order its plan and amount.
Your analytics choice
Checking your choice…
Your choice is kept in this browser only. Turning it off also removes the Google Analytics cookies we set on this site. Google Analytics is provided by Google, which may process data outside the UAE; see Google’s own privacy terms.
5. How long we keep it
Account and learner data are kept until you delete your account. Password-reset links expire after one hour. When you delete your account we remove your account, learners’ progress and bookings from our database. Payment records are kept for accounting without your personal details attached. Progress already saved on your own device stays there until you clear it.
6. Your choices and rights
- See and take your data: Parent Desk → Export saves a copy of the progress stored on this device.
- Correct it: change names inside the app, or email us.
- Delete it: My Account → Delete my account, or email us.
- Withdraw consent at any time by deleting the account.
Depending on where you live (for example under the UAE Personal Data Protection Law, the EU or UK GDPR, or India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act), you may have further rights, including to complain to your local regulator. Write to us and we will help.
7. Keeping data safe
The site uses HTTPS. Passwords are hashed, sign-in cookies are protected from scripts, and repeated failed sign-ins are slowed down. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password and keep the Parent Desk PIN private — the PIN is a child-lock on the device, not account security.
8. Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will tell signed-in parents by email or in the app before it takes effect.
